What is a Spaghetti Western?
The Google definition, as asked, is a movie about the American Old West made cheaply in Europe, typically by an Italian producer and director.
Why would Tarantino use this genre for a WW2 movie?
It doesn't seem like it would fit in this sort of movie, however it does. The powerful music deepens the experience and adds to each scene. The extra dramatic effect when someone is shot somehow doesn't feel out of place and does go with the propaganda-esque nature of the film. The suspense built when a powerful new character is introduced like in Django helps to show who holds the power in every scene. I think my favorite character pushed forward with the elements of the Spaghetti Western is Colonel Hans Landa. The deep orchestra that comes with his appearance in most scenes, especially the restaurant scene, really shows not only how evil this antagonist is, but also shows how powerful Landa is overall as a character, good or evil.
List three ways Tarantino subverts the audience's expectations
The first one that shocked most of the people in the room with me viewing the film was in the bar scene when our protagonists actually died and didn't magically survive. Another surprise was when Landa actually made a deal with the US. Finally there was the pure shock factor of seeing Hitlers face blown off, especially since it is not historically accurate, most people would not really expect it.
